We are on the Eco map!
Last Saturday, six PCC members attended the Sheffield Diocesan Eco Church Festival. This is part of a National Churches’ initiative to fulfil the 5th Mark of Mission – ‘To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth’. This at the heart of our core business as a Church of Mission, every bit as much as ‘Proclaiming the Good News’ and ‘Baptising and nurturing disciples’.
When God had finished ordering the formless Earth into the created world, He saw that ‘it was very good’. None of us could honestly say that humankind has kept it that way. We have exploited, rather than tended to, God’s earth. Jesus asked us to be stunned by the beauty of the lilies of the field and St Paul looked forward to a time ‘that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay’. In the privilege of sharing in this aspect of the Mission of God the Holy Trinity, we can protect our blue planet for our children, their children and all future generations to come.
We have now taken a significant step as a Parish by registering with the Eco Church initiative. We are now literally on their map (as above). This gives us a road map to progress through Bronze, Silver and Gold awards in this initiative, based on the five areas of – Worship and Teaching, Buildings, Land, Community & Global Engagement and Lifestyle.
We’re on the map, let’s all start the journey together, younger and older!
