A Gospel reflection

The 15th of August is one of the Marian festivals of the year alongside other dates including the Annunciation on the 25th of March. One of the favourite hymns sung on these occasions is:

“Tell out my soul, the greatness of the Lord;  unnumbered blessings, give my spirit voice;

tender to me the promise of his word; in God my Saviour shall my heart rejoice.”

This hymn is a paraphrase of the Magnificat- Mary’s song, in which God lifts up the lowly. The lowly are not only those who are oppressed, but also people who have a small hand in a great enterprise. Today is a celebration of collaboration. God could have brought us a kind of salvation untouched by human hand, but preferred to bring it in the flesh and blood of Jesus, born of a woman. God waits upon us for so much that he wants to do, waits for each of us to say, with Mary, “I am the servant of the Lord, let it be with me according to your word.”

Let’s act on this word: “Tell out my soul, the greatness of his might; powers and dominions lay their glory by; proud hearts and stubborn wills are put to flight, the hungry fed, for humble lifted high.”
