Pause for thought – Stewardship

There is one lesson from the past two years which should not surprise us; it is our human fragility, our lack of control over God’s amazing creation. Covid-19 has reinforced this lesson but climate change confirms it decisively. The Bible has frequently pointed this out whenever it refers to the universe; work within its laws and we prosper, ignore them and the consequences are potentially a disaster. Psalm 8 makes the point beautifully that we are really small and inconsequential :-

I will consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers; the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained. What is man, that thou art mindful of him?

However, we believe that we are more than just a minor part of God’s creation, the psalmist again :-

Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands; and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet.

‘Dominion’ is a dangerous word! Today we see this rather as the responsibility of stewardship. Out task is to work with those inside and outside the Church to protect and enhance the fragile environment we inhabit.
