Heritage Open Days – Bell Tower Tours – Saturday 19 September – 10.00am – 2.00pm

St Mary’s Church bell ringers are delighted to be participating in Doncaster’s Heritage Open Days celebrations, part of a wider national festival.

As part of the celebrations, we are marking a very special milestone – the 300^th birthday of three of the church’s magnificent bells.  We warmly invite you to climb the 94 steps of St Mary’s historic tower and discover a part of the church that is rarely seen by the public.

Your visit begins in the ringing room where you can learn about the fascinating art of change ringing and meet the band of ringers who continue this centuries-old tradition.  You’ll have the chance to see the historic carillon and the church’s impressive clock mechanism.

For those who wish to venture a little higher, the bell chamber offers the chance to stand alongside the bells themselves.   Here you can admire these remarkable instruments at close quarters and see the clock hammers that strike the bells to mark the passing of time.

Back on the ground you can have a go on our model bell.
